Self Motivation For The Workplace
The key to self-motivation on the job is to monitor you emotional state and make adjustments to your approach so that you stay positive. Obviously this is much easier said than done, especially when we are in a position where we can’t exactly choose what we want to do. But, taking breaks and getting out of the office on your lunch hour can keep you going for longer and prevent you from burning out. For some, being left with a task they dread doesn’t leave much room for motivation.
When this is the case, make the task a challenge. If everyone else in the office takes 30 minutes to do the same task, challenge yourself to do it in 25 minutes or better, without any mistakes. You’ll instantly forget about the task at hand and you’ll be focused more on the challenge.
To stay motivated, mental techniques, like the one just mentioned, is sometimes the best way to go. The only thing to consider then is whether or not they will work for you – try different approaches and keep track of the ones that are effective. Sometimes it is easier if we break down our overwhelming tasks into smaller tasks. Remember to mentally portion your tasks, especially tasks that may be distracting, such as checking your email – these tasks are best to save for later rather than tackling early in the day. One you have a plan that works for you, stick to it. Working towards a plan that works for you and keeps you motivated may be difficult, but remember, in the long run it is better than not having a plan at all.
Staying motivated isn’t always about the plan. You must also try and channel your negative emotions such as fear and doubt, and use them as inspiration to drive you. Going into a project with a negative state of mind is going to make it unpleasant to accomplish. When things go wrong, don’t get depressed by your failure. Instead, channel that energy into your next project. Turning your negative energy into a positive situation, will help to work out your tension and prevent you from freezing up and losing motivation. Rumination does not help and can easily become a vicious cycle of recrimination. The same “emotional channeling” guidelines apply to any success you have as well. When you know that you’ve accomplished your goal and put your best effort forward, don’t forget to rewards yourself – this is a sure way to keep you motivated with the task at hand.
Motivating yourself throughout the work day isn’t always easy. But, you must also consider that your out of work lifestyle can impact your progress throughout the day. You must schedule your sleep so that you are getting the rest your body needs. You must also choose to eat healthy and treat your body with plenty of nutrition. What food you eat and when you eat it can have an enormous impact on your energy levels and how motivated you can become.
There are many choices, tips and strategies to use for self-motivation. But, there is one thing everyone must recognize. Your brain is a complicated network of organic circuitry and chemical equilibriums, and the balance can be delicate. Motivating yourself at work is just like any other kind of “mind-hacking” (like losing an addiction or improving your social relations) in that you have to be very aware of what affects your mental state.
